Amnesia or loss of memory is the cardinal hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), a progressive neurodegenerative disorder associated with ageing process. Although, AD had been discovered over a century ago, drugs which could cure or halt the progression of the disease are yet to see the light of the day. However, there has been a growing interest in the use of phytomedicines with multipronged mechanisms of action that could target various aspects of the pathologies of AD. Jobelyn is a potent antioxidant African polyherbal formulation with active components that have been acclaimed to show neuroprotection.

The scientists from the Pharmacology department of the  University of Ibadan (Nigeria) in a research study demonstrated how Jobelyn was found to produce a significant increase in the level of alternation behavior compared with the control, suggesting anti-amnesic activity. Also, Jobelyn reversed the memory impairment induced by scopolamine, which further indicates anti-amnesic property. Furthermore, Jobelyn demonstrated a significant inhibition of MDA formation in the frontal cortex and hippocampus of rats, indicating antioxidant property. In addition, it increased the defense armory of the brain tissues, as it significantly increased the concentrations of GSH in the frontal cortex and hippocampus of rats.

Their investigation provides evidence that suggests that Jobelyn has anti-amnesic and antioxidant properties. Although the present data suggest that the anti-amnesic property of Jobelyn might be related to its antioxidant activity, more studies are necessary to clarify this observation.
The researchers concluded that This investigation provides evidence which suggests that Jobelyn has anti-amnesic activity and might offer some promising effects for the treatment of memory deficits. Although more studies are necessary, the present data suggest that the anti-amnesic property of Jobelyn appears to be mediated through the scavenging of reactive oxygen species and/or inhibition of their formation.

The role of polyphenols in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease has been a hot topic for researchers in recent times. Please see below some of these publications:

Polyphenols are the most abundant components of our daily food, occupying the major portion of naturally occurring phytochemicals in plants. Currently, polyphenols have received a special attention from the scientific community against health risk because of their antioxidant capacity and the ability to scavenge the free radicals formed during the pathological process like cancer, cardiovascular diseases and neurodegenerative disorders. Alzheimer’s disease, one of the common forms of dementia is an intricate, multifactorial mental illness which is characterized by age-dependent memory loss ultimately leading to a steady decline of cognitive function.

There are two main processes typical of polyphenols that interest AD’s development: antioxidation and anti-inflammation mechanisms, which are the two main processes involved in the aging mechanism. Polyphenols are considered to have a protective effect against inflammatory mechanisms and as such have been linked to AD, as to many other chronic diseases including diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and atherosclerosis.

Sorghum bicolor supplement is particularly rich in 3-deoxyanthocyanins, such as luteolinidin and apigeninidin, and appears to induce apoptosis and inhibit cell proliferation in cancer cells through the stimulation of various apoptosis promoter genes and the downregulation of certain apoptosis inhibitor genes. In addition, due to the strong antioxidant nature of the phytochemicals, these compounds are able to scavenge free radicals and prevent tissue damage.
