Sorghum bicolor supplement (Jobelyn) was developed from folk medicine which had been in use by people of south western Nigeria for centuries for taking care of diverse health problems including arthritis, stroke, diabetes, cardiovascular disorders, hypertension and even cancer. It is prepared from Sorghum bicolor leaf sheaths ( poroporo oka baba in Yoruba language). To unravel the mystery of this herb more than 20 years work of research work and scientific investigation have been done.
Sorghum bicolor leaf sheath (Jobelyn) contains 106.86 mg/g. ( 10,686 mg/100g) of phenolics. Recently, the National Cancer Institute announced that Sorghum bicolor supplement made from Sorghum bicolor leaf sheaths had been listed in their dictionary of drugs and described it as being rich in polyphenols and polyphenolic acids and has the potential for antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immuno-modulating and chemopreventive activitiAn herbal-based nutritional supplement containing the leaf sheaths of the plant Sorghum bicolor, with potential antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, chemopreventive and immunomodulating activities. Sorghum bicolor supplement contains various phytochemicals, including phenolic acids and polyphenols such as proanthocyanidins. Sorghum bicolor supplement is particularly rich in 3-deoxyanthocyanins, such as luteolinidin and apigeninidin, and appears to induce apoptosis and inhibit cell proliferation in cancer cells through the stimulation of various apoptosis promoter genes and the downregulation of certain apoptosis inhibitor genes. In addition, due to the strong antioxidant nature of the phytochemicals, these compounds are able to scavenge free radicals and prevent tissue damage. Also, intake of this supplement modulates the immune system by both increasing the activity of natural killer (NK) cells and initiating the activation of macrophages.
